Below is a compilation of frequently used Roulette Terms so you can read, learn, and improve your Roulette Vocabulary.
American Roulette Wheel | A Roulette Wheel with 38 slots numbered 1 to 36 and includes a 0 and 00 slot as well. The house edge is 5.4% and is therefore less profitable than European Roulette. |
Black Bet | A bet on the black colour numbers. The payout is even money or 1:1. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Bottom Track | The slanted inner area of the Roulette wheel where the ball slides down before it bounces onto the head of the wheel and lands into the wheel slot. |
Chasing Losses | Increasing your bet amounts in the hope of recouping your losses. |
Cold Table | A table where all the Players, including you, have been losing consistently. |
Column Bet | A bet placed on 12 numbers in a column. They payout is 2:1. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Combination Bet | Various bets placed at a time on different outcomes of a spin; a bet with 1 or more chips on 2 or more numbers. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Corner Bet | A single bet placed on 4 numbers. The chip is placed at the intersection of the four numbers (13, 14, 16, 17). See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Double Zero Roulette | Same as American Roulette |
Dozen Bet | A bet on one of 3 dozen numbers on the Roulette table. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
En Prison Rule | Also known as the Surrender Rule, this type of betting lowers the house edge on your subsequent spin. It involves outside even money betting. If a wager is placed on red/black or some similar outside even money bet and the ball lands on 0, you have the option of losing half your wager or keeping the bet on the table ‘en prison’ for the next spin. If your next spin wins, you win your original bet and no winnings. If it loses you lose your bet altogether. |
European Roulette Wheel | A Roulette Wheel with 37 slots numbered 1 to 36 as well as 0. The House Edge is 2.7% |
Even Bet | A wager on any even number. The payout is even money or 1:1. |
Even Money | A wager that pays even money or 1:1, including bets on Red/Black, Odd/Even, Low/High. |
Five Number Bet | The worst possible bet in Roulette which carries a house edge of 7.89%. It is a combination bet on 0, 00, 1, 2, 3 and wins if the ball lands on any of these numbers. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
French Roulette Wheel | Same as European Roulette Wheel |
High Bet | An even money bet that the last 18 numbers (19 – 36) on the Roulette wheel will hit. |
House Edge | The casino advantage; the difference between the true odds and the odds that the casino pays out. |
Inside Bet | A bet placed on or between any of the numbers on the Roulette wheel. |
Line Bet | A bet that the ball will land on 1 of 6 numbers in a line. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more details. |
Low Bet | An even-money bet that the first 18 numbers (1 – 18) on the Roulette wheel will hit. |
Martingale System | A Roulette System in which you double your last bet each time you lose, in the hopes of winning back your original bet. See ‘The Martingale System’ for more information. |
Odd Bet | A wager on any odd number/s on the Roulette table. The Payout is even money or 1:1. |
Outside Bet | A bet on the non numbered sections of the Roulette table. |
Quarter Bet | Same as Corner Bet |
Red Bet | A bet on the red colour numbers. The payout is even money or 1:1. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Single Zero Roulette | See European Roulette |
Split Bet | A wager that the ball will land on one of two selected numbers. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Straight Up Bet | A bet on a single number. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
Surrender | Also known as ‘En Prison’ rule. If you make an even money wager and the ball lands on the 0 or 00, you have the option of losing only half of your wager. See ‘Different Types of Bets’ for more information. |
